www.MyBusinessName.co.uk / .com right...?

Well, no! As with most things a little forward thinking can pay dividends. Many businesses that originally bought domain names just slapped the .co.uk / .com on the end of their existing business name and that was that. Increasingly, and for a number of good reasons, businesses are buying a number of different domain names.

Here's an example, consider the character Austen Jones who is a self-employed widget and thingy maker. He duly rushes across to 123-domain-reg.co.uk and buys www.AustenJones.co.uk. That's great, he has inexpensively protected his (business) name and can now sort out web design and hosting for his web site.

But, our story doesn't finish there. Had Austen have been aware that domain names affect a website's ranking with search engines he might have registered a different domain name or more domain names. For instance, the following domains would score better with his target markets:

  • www.AustenJonesThingy.co.uk, or just
  • www.Widget.co.uk
  • www.Thingy.co.uk etc etc
Plus, aside from the important search engine issue, if you were looking to buy some widgets which link would you follow? And if you wanted to buy a Thingy which link would you follow now? As you can see it can make sound marketing sense to register a number of different domain names that describe the main services / products you offer.

The moral: when buying domain names give some thought to protecting your business name AND using keywords that are relevant to your business!

Tip: if you have more than one domain name you still only need the one website! You can configure both domain names to point at the same web site, this is called 'web forwarding' and is just one of the FREE services that you can take advantage of when you register domain names via ourselves!
